3. Innovative services and full functions

The library follows readers-centered principle to educate people and the motto of “harmony creation and quality service”. It has always served to provide quality services to readers and spared no effort in the following aspects:

(1)  Literature resources are properly arranged and structured to provide one-stop borrowing, returning, reading and consulting services. It adopts open-shelf service model. In 2013, the library became the first university library in China to introduce in RFID technology to offer one-stop self-services. Service quality has been remarkably promoted. And those machines are referred to as ATM for books. The application of RFID has significantly targeted the challenge of inadequate learning space for readers and accelerated the pace of intelligent library development, which marks a major step towards building the library into a modern and intelligent library.

(2) In order to better support teaching and research efforts of the university, YNNU library has built research rooms for leading representatives of disciplines, faculty members and students, providing them with more tailored and relatively private space. At the same time, we also offer reservation service to faculty members to complement routine circulation service and improve the amount of borrowed books.

(3)  We have given full play to Association of Student Librarians. The association’s purpose is to develop libraries and inherit civilization. It also aims to promote the spirit of dedication and altruism among young students. The association provides students access to participating in development, governance and service of the library. The association has already become a great feature of the library.

(4) YNNU library offers consultancy service in various forms to answer questions concerning application of library resources and services. It also engages itself in exchanges with readers to promote application and learn about readers’ demands and expectations. While the library makes continuous efforts to promote its cooperation with foreign counterparts, it is also engaged in literature relay, thesis collection and searching as well as academic evaluation report production.

(5) The library organizes various training and teaching activities to raise readers awareness and promote their proficiency in literature acquisition, management and analysis. Based on the initial optional course open to all students, Searching for Information, the library has offered other credit-based courses such as Elementary School Library Research, Library Guide and other optional courses. Furthermore we have organized Lakeside Forum lectures. All have contributed to the promotion of university culture and improved the strength of the library.

4. An inclusive library that expands its social functions and channels of global cooperation

While the library has been providing research services and support to teaching and research, it also plays an increasingly prominent role by more active engagement in social services. It has worked with Yunnan Writers Association of Yunnan Federation of Literature and Art Circles to organize events, such as lectures and literature resources development projects. Together we founded the only “Yunnan Contemporary Literature and Art Documents Information Center” in China, a step closer to build Yunnan into a cultural power in China. We have also established cooperative ties with Heshun Village Library of Tengchong County to provide both technical and managerial support to our partner. We have received students of primary schools and middle schools and offered humanistic education.

During its development, YNNU library has also strengthened its sense of international cooperation. It has established Kunming China-Japan Exchange Window jointly with Japan Foundation. Our partner has provided Japanese literature and some funding while we have offered venues, equipment and personnel. Together we greatly support local university students who are interested in Japanese culture by providing them literature resources and organizing Japanese corner, lectures and other cultural events, all of which have greatly promoted understanding and friendly exchanges of the two peoples.

5. Promotion of the legacy of National Southwest Associated University and cooperation with libraries of Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Nankai University

The library makes full use of valuable traditions and legacy of National Southwest Associated University. By 2015, it has successfully organized three librarian forums with respective librarians from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Nankai University, National Tsing Hua University of Taiwan and Yunnan Normal University participating in. Five parties have signed cooperation agreement and launched various training projects in the forms of information sharing, research, academic exchanges, technical support, lectures and personnel further education. The cooperation has greatly strengthened buildup and sharing of resources, coordinated research and development and personnel support and training. Further consensus on “Cultural Heritage and Strategic cooperation under the Banner of National Southwest Associated University” has been reached.

6. Achieving common development and sharing universities resources based on Yunnan Universities Library Information Working Committee and Library Alliance of Yunnan Universities

Yunnan Universities Library Information Working Committee was set up in 1982, and YNNU library has been serving as its secretariat since 1984 with Librarian of Yunnan Normal University working as its president. Its functions cover leadership over information gathering efforts of university libraries in Yunnan, promotion of university library information cause, improvement of adequate literature resources of higher education in Yunnan and upgrading the governance and service level and university libraries.

Library Alliance of Yunnan Universities was established in 2012 with Yunnan Normal University acting as its secretariat and the Librarian of Yunnan Normal University working as its president. The alliance follows the motto of sharing resources, complementing each other’s advantages, and promoting common trust, interest and development. It aims to boost common development of libraries of Yunnan universities, establish coordinated, integrated and win-win and sound development mechanism, promote and channel quality education resources to flow freely and allocate properly among member libraries and form reasonable Yunnan higher education development and division system, thus to consciously promote education quality, schooling and social reputation.
